Rainbow umbrellas
Have you heard of a kid who doesn’t like running in puddles? Or maybe you know a child who doesn’t like rainbows? This fun project includes all what kids love – puddles, rain boots, rainbow-colored umbrella and THEMSELVES!
This is a project for 5-10 years old kids (Kindergarten – 4rth Grade). Kids can draw themselves or their friends.
Materials: paper (large paper is preferable), oil pastels or crayons, blue, purple and black liquid watercolors, thick brushes.
Project takes about 60 minutes (2 sessions are recommended)
Session 1 – pencil outlines
- place the paper vertically
- draw an outline of the upper fabric part of the umbrella at the top of the paper. It should be big enough. Younger kids can trace halves of paper plates.
- make a thick dot at the middle of the umbrella – that’s gonna be the top (the center where ribs meet)
- draw the tips of the umbrella by making 6-7 “hops” or half-circles. Add the ribs – each rib should start at the tip and end at the top (the thick point on top). Do NOT draw a handle yet.
- draw a bell-shaped raincoat under the umbrella.
- add a neck and a head. Let kids decide if they want to portrait themselves from the front or from the side. Add hair, eye/s, ear/s, nose and lips.
- draw a sleeve – make two smile-looking lines and connect them with a short line to make the edge. Add a hand (circle).
- now draw a handle – start from the center of the umbrella’s edge and end at the hand.
- add legs and rain boots
- draw a large oval around the feet – that’s a puddle
Session 2 – coloring
- color the umbrella with ROYGBIV colors OR as desired.
- color the face with skin tone. Then color facial parts and hair. Color raincoat, pants and boots.
